This panel was originally inspired by ‘John Conneely’s Sheep’, one of Ben’s very first panels created in response to the fantastic Connemara landscape surrounding the family home. The two share similar features: luscious and vivid green pastures, grazing sheep, rippling blue water, and solid stone walls. The brightly-painted houses seen in the area in spots such as Clifden and Roundstone are there too, as is the iconic and majestic Galway Hooker.
So what makes the 2022 edition of ‘Late for Mass’ so special? It’s not just the scale of the design (which is almost three times bigger than the original); it’s the sheer detail. Every window, door, roof, sail, spire has been cut by hand. Even the tiny door knobs! You’ll see something different, something extra, every time you look at this quirky encapsulation of the West.
