‘Anchor Beach’ at Aughrusbeg on the Aughrus Peninsula in north-west Connemara is (not surprisingly) so-called by the locals because of the anchor stranded in the sand.

The anchor is from the wreck of the Canadian-built Verity, a three-mast barque which lost its battle against the elements in January 1880 having drifted miles along the Irish coast. The distressed vessel reportedly drifted past a steamer and a schooner and let off distress rockets, but no rescue was forthcoming. Two men lost their lives and four were injured. The anchor is a poignant memory of a ship that was heavier than the Cutty Sark.

This fused glass textured plate from Connemara Blue beautifully combines details of anchor, birds, boat, rocks, sea, sky and beach. Shades of blues and yellow, together with frothy frit, create an evocative encapsulation of the Connemara coastal landscape.

A unique memento of a stay in Ireland or a perfect handmade gift for someone special.
